Compagni di scuola, una scommessa vinta di Rai Fiction
Una sfida. Una scommessa. Il più bel prodotto di Rai Fiction per Rai Due. Tutti, dallo sceneggiatore Sandro Petraglia ai registi Tiziana Aristarco e Claudio Norza fino ai protagonisti (Massimo Lopez, Paolo Sassanelli, Valeria Valeri, Imma Piro) usano queste parole per raccontare "Compagni di scuola". La nuova serie in 26 episodi, raccolti in 13 serate che andranno in onda su Rai Due da martedì 25 settembre, viene presentata in anteprima al 53esimo Prix Italia. Ed è una novità, quella di proiettare in questa sede un prodotto seriale, che dice l'attenzione dei curatori del Prix a questa fiction e, quindi, la sua qualità. I compagni del titolo sono alunni e professori del liceo scientifico sperimentale "Giacomo Leopardi": un microcosmo in cui si intrecciano mille storie diverse, ispirato a una serie televisiva spagnola ma poi completamente riscritto per la tv italiana. Lopez è il vicepreside della scuola, un professore di storia e filosofia che ama la letteratura e la musica classica. "E' un ruolo che non mi assomiglia molto, ma molto stimolante da interpretare. La bellezza di questa fiction nella storia profondamente corale". All'origine dell'alta qualità del prodotto c'è soprattutto la scrittura di Sandro Petraglia, già sceneggiatore di "Meri per sempre", "Don Milani", "La scuola" e "Auguri professore" . "Ho grandi perplessità sui format stranieri, perchÈ l'Italia ha molti autori. Ma per un prodotto seriale vale anche un'altra logica: acquistare un'idea già apprezzata da un vasto pubblico significa lavorare su un progetto già sperimentato. A interessarmi, è stato soprattutto il tema del confronto tra adulti e adolescenti". Petraglia ha lavorato ai dialoghi con otto giovani, che di volta in volta firmano con lui la sceneggiatura delle diverse puntate: "Così anche la scrittura è stata una scuola, un laboratorio per nuove leve". Rai Fiction fa sapere di aver investito per il 2002 la stessa somma dell'anno precedente. E "Compagni di scuola" festeggia anche la nascita di un sito tutto suo, www.compagnidiscuola.tv.

A challenge or a bet, Rai Fiction's best product for Rai Due: this is what everyone has to say about "Compagni di scuola" from script writer Sandro Petraglia to directors Tiziana Aristarco and Claudia Norza and actors Massimo Lopez, Paolo Sassanelli, Valeria Valeri and Imma Piro. The new series in 26 episodes will be broadcast on 13 evenings on Rai Due from Tuesday 25th September and presented in a preview at the 53rd edition of Prix Italia. Showing a serial production is a novelty which reflects Prix organizers' interest in quality TV drama. The "compagni" (companions) in the title are the students and teachers of "Giacomo Leopardi" high school: a thousand different stories interwoven into a microcosm and inspired by a Spanish television series completely rewritten for Italian TV. Lopez is the deputy head teacher of the school, a history and philosophy teacher who loves literature and classical music. "It is a role than does really fit me, but is stimulating". The great thing about this TV drama is the choral storyline". The high quality of the production is largely the result of the script by Sandro Petraglia, screenplay writer of "Meri per sempre", "Don Milani", "La Scuola" and "Auguri Professore". "I have serious doubts about foreign formats because Italy has many authors of its own. But for a serial, another logic also applies: buying a successful idea means working on a well-tested project. What most interested me was the topic of confrontation between adults and adolescents". Petraglia worked on the script dialogues with eight young people whose names are on the different episodes of the screenplay: "Writing the script was also like going to school, a workshop for the new generation". Rai Fiction has announced that in 2002 it plans to invest the same sum as the previous year. "Compagni di scuola" is also celebrating the birth of its own website, www.compagnidiscuola.tv.

Il sociale al Prix, nella categoria del premio speciale "Granarolo", ha avuto giurati di alto livello, tra cui Abdelmajid Chaar, Chief Television Broadcast Partnership and Special Projects della fao, l'agenzia delle Nazioni Unite per l'alimentazione e l'agricoltura.
Qual è il significato della presenza fao al Prix Italia?
La nostra presenza qui rientra nell'ambito di una partnership che abbiamo sviluppato con la Rai. Tra le precedenti collaborazioni, cito il workshop per giornalisti svoltosi a Venezia, nel giugno scorso, con la partecipazione di esperti fao. Credo che la nostra agenzia possa dare un aiuto concreto nel campo del broadcasting, mettendo a disposizione le sue competenze specifiche. Siamo quindi lieti di essere qui, per dare un segnale forte alla produzione televisiva che s'interroga sui problemi dell' umanità.
Il clima del concorso è stato fortemente influenzato dalla tragedia americana...
La nostra sensazione è che ci sia ancora uno sforzo notevole da fare per andare al di là del lavoro giornalistico immediato e "caldo". E' importante, dunque, favorire una riflessione adeguata sui fatti: solo così potremmo raggiungere una miglior comprensione dei problemi, anche di quelli legati alla fame e allo sviluppo sostenibile.
Com'è stata la sua esperienza di giurato?
E' stato un lavoro difficile, e al contempo molto interessante. La maggior parte dei programmi in concorso per il "Granarolo" sono di alto livello professionale, soprattutto sotto l'aspetto tecnico. Si vede che dietro a tutto questo c'è un'industria avanzata; va ricordato, però, che questo non può bastare. La televisione non è solo industria, ma deve essere soprattutto messaggio.

What does fao stand for at Prix Italia?
Our presence is part of a partnership we have developed with Rai TV. Previous joint projects included the workshops for journalists in Venice last June with the participation of FAI experts. I think our organization can make a concrete contribution to broadcasting by making available its expertise. We are happy to be here to testify the stand taken by television productions in tackling the problems of humanity.
The climate at the competition has been strongly affected by the American tragedy...
Our feeling is that there is still a lot to be done to go beyond on-the-spot journalism. It is important to foster adequate reflection on events as it is the only way to achieve a better understanding of problems, including those linked to hunger and sustainable development.
What has your experience been as a juror?
It has been difficult and very interesting at the same time. Most of the programmes in the competition for the "Granarolo" prize are very high quality, especially from the technical standpoint, reflecting the high standard of the industry. But this is not enough, television is not just an industry, above all it must be a message.
Ravlich: "La radio è il mezzo dell'informazione e dell'analisi"
Robyn Ravlich è produttrice esecutiva per la ABC australiana. In qualità di presidente di giuria della sezione "Radio documentary" spiega, in una breve intervista, come vengono valutati i programmi in concorso e ragiona sul ruolo dell'informazione radiofonica.
In che modo giudicate i diversi prodotti?
Stiamo procedendo con giudizi editoriali e artistici. La qualità dei programmi è molto alta per entrambe le categorie: documentari di attualità e culturali. Con una particolarità: un filo rosso lega i diversi prodotti, c'è sempre un legame tra eventi storici del passato e l'impatto che hanno sulla vita quotidiana di oggi.
Che ruolo ha la radio di fronte a fatti come gli attentati di New York e Washington?
Le immagini televisive sono davanti ai nostri occhi. Mi sono trovata a parlare con molte persone quasi ossessionate dalla forza delle immagini di questi ultimi giorni. Ma tutti, in realtà, cercano in fondo la storia. Ho sentito molte persone dire: "ma questo è un film" e il problema sta proprio qui, nella difficoltà di superare ciò che mostra la tv e capire gli aspetti umani di quello che accade. La radio è capace di creare un particolare legame, lascia esplorare gli aspetti umani degli eventi. La radio è il mezzo dell'informazione e dell'analisi.
Ravlich: "Radio is a Medium for Information and Analysis"
Robyn Ravlich is executive producer, Acoustic Art Unit, ABC Australia. As president of the "Radio Documentary" jury, she explained in a short interview, how the jury judges the programmes in the competition and talked about the role of radio news.
How do you judge the different programmes?
We are using editorial and artistic criteria. The quality of the programmes is very high for both current affairs and cultural documentaries. There is one particular thread running through most of the entries: a link between the historical events of the past and their impact on daily life today.
What is the role of radio in the face of events like the attacks on New York and Washington?
We have television images before our eyes. I have talked to many people almost obsessed by the force of the images broadcast over the past few days. But in actual fact, we are all looking for the meaning behind the story. I have heard many people say: "but this is a film" and this is the crux of the problem, the difficulty of overcoming what the TV shows us and understanding the human aspects of what is happening. Radio is able to establish a special link, it can explore the human facets of events. Radio is the medium of information and analysis".
Il Sofà delle Muse
Venerdì 21 settembre alle ore 17 verrà installato in Piazza Maggiore a Bologna il più lungo divano del mondo: con la relativa certificazione da parte di un notaio per conto del "Guinnes dei primati". Si tratta di un divano di 37 metri ideato dal Dams di Bologna per il trentennale della sua fondazione. Il divano accoglierà il popolo del Prix e i suoi ospiti per chiacchierare, incontrarsi e riposare.
The Muses' Divan
The longest divan in the world will be assembled in Piazza Maggiore, Bologna tomorrow at 5.00 p.m., certified by a notary for the Guinness book of records. The divan is 37 metres long and was thought up by Dams (Bologna University Department of Art, Music and Entertainment) to mark its thirtieth birthday. The divan will welcome Prix participants and guests to chat, meet and take a rest.

Rai Tre: Report sfida il Grande Fratello
"Porre domande, suscitare inquietudini e suggerire valori, questo Ë stato tradizionalmente e vuole rimanere il ruolo di RaiTre nel panorama televisivo nazionale", lo dice Giuseppe Cereda, direttore della Rete, nell'incontro di oggi con i giornalisti al Prix Italia. Cereda difende lo spazio di impegno alternativo e generalista della sua Rete. Che, sottolinea il direttore, costa pochissimo (107 miliardi di lire all'anno per la programmazione) e produce molto. Anche se "in questo momento di crisi internazionale RaiTre sta soffrendo in termini di immagine visto che le reti-evento sono RaiUno e RaiDue - precisa Cereda - . Ma la Rete Ë pronta a portare nella sua programmazione 'una tensione etica più forte' basata sulla riflessione". Sono allo studio, infatti, puntate de "La grande storia in prima serata" dedicate agli eventi di New York con un taglio di approfondimento tratto dal confronto con il passato. E anche "Chi l'ha visto", uno dei reality show storici della Rete, si occuperà di persone scomparse nella tragedia delle Twin Towers. Le novità del palinsesto autunno-inverno sono la collocazione in prima serata delle pungenti inchieste di Milena Gabanelli con "Report" che, il giovedÏ, si scontra con il Grande Fratello. Mentre il sabato si alterneranno "Il pianeta delle meraviglie" con Licia ColÚ, "Gaia" di Gregorio Paolini e "Ulisse" curato da Alberto e Piero Angela. Da marzo Ë previsto un nuovo talk-show sulla televisione di Pippo Baudo. Tra i volti nuovi della Rete Neri MarcorË che prende il posto nella conduzione di "Un pugno di libri" di Patrizio Roversi, impegnato quest'anno in un viaggio attorno al mondo in barca a vela con "Velisti per caso". Rai Tre: "Report" Challenges "Big Brother"
"Asking questions, raising doubts and proposing values has traditionally been and still is the role of Rai Tre on the national television scene" says network director Giuseppe Cereda at today's meeting with journalists at Prix Italia. Cereda defends the space devoted to alternative commitment and general interest programmes on his channel. A channel, he emphasized, that has a low budget (107 billion liras a year for programming) and produces a great deal. Even though "Rai Tre is suffering in terms of image during the current international crisis given the fact that the main news programmes are broadcast on Rai Uno and Rai Due", Cereda explains "the channel is ready to give its programmes a stronger ethical thrust based on reflection". New programmes in the pipeline are episodes of "La grande storia in prima serata" devoted to the attacks in New York with an in-depth slant based on comparison with the past. "Chi l'ha visto", one of Rai Tre's long-standing reality shows will devote an episode to people missing in the tragedy of the Twin Towers. The novelty of the autumn-winter programme schedule is the prime time slot allotted Milena Gabanelli's probing inquiries with "Report" which clashes with "Big Brother" on Thursday evening. On Saturdays "Il pianeta delle meraviglie" with Licia ColÚ will alternate with "Gaia" by Gregorio Paolini and "Ulisse" produced by Alberto and Piero Angela. From March there will be a new talk show on television hosted by Pippo Baudo. The new faces on the channels include Neri MarcorË who is taking over "Un pugno di libri" from Patrizio Roversi, busy on a trip round the world on a yacht in "Velisti per caso". Continuing are the cult programme slots of "Blob" and "Fuori Orario", the intelligent eccentric counter-reactions of ephimeral 'neo-tv'.

"Il significato di servizio pubblico? Credo che presupponga, necessariamente, un ventaglio di programmi per il piccolo e grande pubblico" risponde Sabine Hviid, radio producer di Dr (Danmarks radio). "Una produzione aperta a tutti, ai diversi interessi, gusti, mentalità, idee, capace di includere anche i programmi cosiddetti di nicchia". "Il compito della televisione pubblica Ë di sviluppare la cultura" dice Jota Watanabe, Director Copyright and Contract Division Dept. della Nhk la tv pubblica giapponese. "In Giappone servizio pubblico significa prontezza e accuratezza dell'informazione, cultura e intrattenimento. Un dato importante: la nostra emittente Ë finanziata solo dal canone e non trasmette pubblicità. L'unica eccezione, per quanto riguarda i soldi, si ha durante le elezioni quando il governo sostiene le trasmissioni politiche". A quanto ammonta il budget disponibile ogni anno? "Sono circa 610 milioni di dollari" risponde Toshio Asahoka, Executive Producer Music Programs Division della Nhk. "In Francia il servizio pubblico Ë forte e deve restare tale per controbilanciare il peso delle tv commerciali" dice Isabelle Mestre, responsabile dei programmi di Arte France, canale culturale della tv pubblica totalmente senza pubblicità. "Per offrire un servizio di qualità non ci devono essere condizionamenti dettati dall'interesse economico. Per questo in Francia si sta creando una holding che raggruppa i canali pubblici. Per il resto funziona come in Italia: canone più tetto pubblicitario".
Public TV: Views at Prix
"What does public service mean? I think it presupposes a broad range of programmes for specialist viewers and the public at large", says Sabine Hviid, DR radio producer (Denmark). "A production open to all, to myriad interests, tastes, mentalities, ideas and able to include so-called niche programmes". "The task of public broadcasting is to foster culture" says Jota Watanabe, director of the copyright and contract division of NHK, Japan's public television. "In Japan, public service means promptness and accuracy of news plus culture and entertainment. An important figure: our service is funded only by licensing fees and does not broadcast advertising. The only exception to this is during the elections when the government pays for political party broadcasts". What is the annual budget? "Around 610 million dollars" replies Toshio Asahoka, executive producer of the Music Programs division of NHK. "In France, the public service is strong and must remain so to counter-balance the weight of commercial TV networks" says Isabelle Mestre, head of programmes for Arte France, a cultural public service channel completely without advertising. "To offer a quality service, there must be no conditioning by economic concerns. This is why France is setting up a holding company grouping together public channels. Otherwise, it works as in Italy: licensing fee plus income from advertising".

La sesta giornata del Prix comincia alle dodici, con la conferenza stampa del direttore di Rai Tre Giuseppe Cereda nell'ex Sala Borsa. Nello stesso spazio, alle 15,30, è poi previsto un dibattito pubblico delle giurie del concorso internazionale dei programmi radio e tv e dei siti web. Modera W. Paterson Ferns, presidente del festival di Banff. Alle 19 comincia invece una serata tutta dedicata a una nuova anteprima Rai: "Emigranti", il film documentario scritto e diretto da Roberto Olla con la regia di Nicola Bertini per la serie di Rai Tre "La grande storia in prima serata", a cura di Luigi Bizzarri e di Francesco Cirafici. "Emigranti" viene proiettato alle 20,30 al cinema Imperiale. Alle 19 invece, sempre nell'ex sala Borsa di Palazzo d'Accursio, è previsto un incontro con l'autore Roberto Olla, il giornalista televisivo italiano che ha pensato e scritto i più bei documentari storici prodotti dalla nostra televisione di Stato.
Prix Today
The sixth day of Prix Italia starts at noon with a press conference by Rai Tre director Giuseppe Cereda in the ex Sala Borsa. In the same venue, at 15.00 there will be a public debate of the juries judging the international competitions of radio and TV programmes and websites. Chairing the discussion is W. Paterson Ferns, president of the Banff festival. At 19.00 is the start of an evening dedicated to a new Rai preview of "Emigrants" the documentary written and produced by Roberto Olla with director Nicola Bertini for the Rai Tre series "Great history in prime time" by Luigi Bizzarri and Francesco Cirafici. "Emigrants" is being shown at 20.30 at Cinema Imperiale. Scheduled for 19.00 is a meeting with the author Roberto Olla, the Italian TV journalist who conceived and wrote the best historical documentaries produced by Italian public TV.
