This ethical-linguistic code, aimed at those who operate mainly within the context of broadcasting communication - but not only them - intends to offer a tool as adapted as possible to the profound social and cultural changes which have taken place in recent year tin the fields of disability and communication.
Even today we read or hear terms such as handicappato or portatore di handicap when it is now established that disability is not something which belongs to the individual but is the product of the social context in which he or she lives. It is just a question of words, it is true, but words carry weight and, as we know, they can destroy or construct. The use today of the term disabile would seem to be a step forward, although already we begin to hear the term diversamente dotati (differently abled), to better define stories, realities and, above all, potentialities which are really extraordinary in a context in which diversity becomes an added value and a valuable opportunity for the entire collectivity.
This text was born out of one of the ideas discussed at length in the Working Group that the General Direction of the Board of RAI set up in the summer of 1998 to contribute to the Social Secretariat of RAI and to contribute to the debate on social themes and in particular that of the disabled. Work was completed as planned in the spring of the following year. Taking part were Andrea Canevaro, Giuliana Ledovi, Salvatore Maenza, Lorenzo Mucci, Vincenzo Scotto Lavina and myself. It was out of this experience that UCAD, which drew up this document, was born. Special thanks to the above, and all those who collaborated with them, for having given life to an initiative which we hope will be useful and of interest to all.
