RAI: ROMEO, WELL TOLD SOCIAL
ACTION GETS AN AUDIENCE
CONTRI, THE PUBBLICITA' E PROGRESSO TRADEMARK GUARANTEES CAMPAIGNS
Gran San Bernardo Hospice (SWITZERLAND) - It
is not true that we lose an audience by speaking
about and communicating the voluntary service and
solidarity to others. In fact, when it is done
well, it actually creates audience''. This was
emphasised by Carlo Romeo, director of the Rai
Social Action Department, while he participated
in the conference: ''San Bernardo 2005 Special
Award - Mountains and solidarity: what are the
alliances between the voluntary service and institutions?'',
organised in the Gran San Bernardo Hospice (Switzerland)
by the Region of Valle d'Aosta, the Rai Social
Action Department and the service centre of the
Valle d'Aosta voluntary service. Carlo Romeo highlighted
that ''at the Festival di Sanremo when Paolo Bonolis
launched the fund-raising campaign destined for
the construction of a hospital in Darfur, he earned
eight share points''. He then added: "It is
therefore necessary that social communication and
that relating to the voluntary service is carried
out professionally and Paolo Bonolis knows how
to do this". Alberto Contri, President of
the Pubblicità e Progresso Association,
member of the Board of Directors of Rai from 1998
to 2002, invited us ''not to consider the voluntary
service as a form of amateurism because it is highly
important and therefore must be performed professionally".
The president of Pubblicità e Progresso
also confirmed that ''our trademark is a guarantee
for a successful campaign since we coordinate initiatives
and give hierarchical importance to our campaigns''.

MINORS: A BOOK OF FAIRY TALES
FROM "30 ORE PER LA VITA"
Rome - And they all lived happily ever after,
not everyone, not always.... All fairy tales from
around the world are similar, but these tales are
not the same as those of real children from around
the world. The Trenta Ore Per La Vita Association,
a relentless supporter of projects for minors,
thought about using fairy tales, the passepartout
of every childhood and link between generations,
to reveal the real world of today's children. Ten
illustrated fairy tales, with deliberate reference
in each to today's world, deal with the serious
conditions in which children of today find themselves:
from child soldiers to children on the streets,
from child prostitution to the exploitation of
minors in the workplace, to trips of hope to the
other many explosive realities which are difficult
to discuss and uncomfortable to deal with, in particular
for parents. The aim of the book "Il Mondo
dei Contrari Nuove Favole per Comprendere Nuove
Realtà" is to raise awareness among
children of far off realities. Use is also made
of educational country cards at the end of each
tale. These tales also offer reassurance to children
that a positive reality also exists in the form
of the voluntary service worldwide which is always
present to combat emergencies and human suffering.
The book, despite the fact that it deals with such
difficult issues, is pleasant to read and at times
also very entertaining. It allows both parents
and children to spend time together discussing
and dealing with these issues. The book will be
presented tomorrow at the Book Fair in Turin. Proceeds
will go to the construction of the Citè des
Jeunes, a welcome and information centre for disadvantaged
youths in Bujumbura, Burundi, a project presented
by VIS - The International Volunteer Service for
Development during the television edition 2004.

The Mediterranean a fundamental element shared
by both. Also that afternoon, Bresso attended the

Foundation. "Among the fundamental objectives
of a big city" - said Bresso during the opening
of the Fair" - "is to promote a huge
cultural event. For Turin, this event is the Book
Fair, within which we will present for the first
time this year the Cultural Olympics to reinforce
the choice of Turin, together with Rome, as the
cultural capital for 2006". "The traditional
aspect of the Fair" - she added - "is
confirmed by the high numbers of people in attendance,
demonstrating a passion for this event. New aspects
include the strong emphasis on professions and
technology, aimed at highlighting the fact that
we are a region with a strong sense of innovation.

BOOK FAIR: DARFUR, A DRAMA EXPLAINED
IN BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS
Turin - "Darfur is a symbol of a human and
social catastrophe". With this brief, Giuseppe
Deodato, Director General of Cooperation Development,
depicted the African tragedy occurring in the region
of Sudan during the International Book Fair taking
place in Turin today. A land torn to shreds by
conflict which to date has left seventy thousand
dead and more than two million displaced or as
refugees. Deodato, along side Barbara Contini,
the Ministry for Foreign Affairs envoy in Sudan,
photographer Giovanni Santi, Carlo Romeo, Head
of the Rai Social Action Department and the President
of the Region of Piemonte, Mercedes Bresso, reinforced
the message of "a challenge for Italy to give
a small part of what we produce to improve the
dramatic situations occurring in certain parts
of the world". The book, "Darfur, un
dramma dimenticato" was presented and distributed
to the public, who were shown a small film. The
photographs, all in black and white and by Giovanni
Santi, depict "evocative and harrowing scenes" -
as described in the introduction of the book by
the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gianfranco Fini
- demonstrating the enormity of the tragedy with
which the people of Darfur live and who have been
ignored for some time".

SPORT: UISP, CHILDREN IN THE
SQUARES OF 63 ITALIAN CITIES
Rome - "Bimbi in piazza" has returned
for its 2005 edition. This demonstration organised
by the UISP - Italian Union of Sport For All and
by Sporty Club is entirely dedicated to children,
who will enliven the squares of 63 Italian cities
once again this year in May and August. The main
day of events will take place on Sunday the 8th
of May when 32 Italian cities will simultaneously
participate. Spend a day differently, together
with friends while playing or having fun: this
is the object of the event, with children the main
protagonists. A rainbow of colours and creativity
will transform the squares into areas of celebration,
where sport and games unite. In all the cities,
in fact, different areas will be prepared for various
games, from the most common to the most unusual.
Naturally, the most popular games will be there
such as hopscotch, tug-of-war, game of the goose,
sack races and much more. An agreement was also
made with the C.I.A. (Italian Agricultural Federation)
to develop a sport and diet education project.
Movement, sport and games are fundamental elements
in the harmonious development of young people,
but it is essential that these elements are combined
with a healthy diet for an active style of living.
This purpose of this year's manifestation is to
promote international cooperation as promoted by
Peace Games, the NGO of UISP. "Bimbi in Piazza" has
sponsored a nursery school in the Shu'fat refugee
camp north of Jerusalem. The nursery school is
called Al-Zohur (the bud) and has four rooms and
a small outdoor garden, where children up to twelve
years of age can pass their afternoons. Via "Bimbi
in Piazza", funds will be raised to buy new
games, paper and colouring pencils for the smaller
children and mini basketball nets and balls as
garden games. This material will be used by 80
children who attend the nursery in the morning
and about 100 older children who play in the building
in the afternoon. The initiative has the patronage
of the President of the Republic, with sponsorship
from the Ministry of Heritage, the Ministry of
Equal Opportunities, the Ministry of Education,
University and Scientific Research, the Ministry
of Employment and Social Policies and the Rai Social
Action Department. "Bimbi in Piazza" will
be supported by UC Sport & Sicurezza, Carige
Insurance and Carige Banking Group and Monte Dei
